Barasat Hospital doctors successfully remove fibrous histiocytoma from 50-year-old patient
Kolkata: A team of surgeons at Barasat District Hospital have successfully removed nodular swelling on both cheeks of a 50-year-old woman suffering from 'fibrous histiocytoma'.
A fibrous histiocytoma is a benign soft tissue tumour that may present as a fibrous mass anywhere in the human body. The involvement of the oral cavity is extremely rare and very few cases have been reported in the literature to date.
However, the case of the 50-year-old patient from the Mallickpara area of Bira in North 24-Parganas is a bit different. She had nodules on both his cheeks that were already swollen but did not feel any pain. A nodule is a growth of abnormal tissue. Nodules can develop just below the skin. They can also develop in deeper skin tissues or internal organs.

In order to identify the exact diagnosis, the doctors at the hospital performed an excisional biopsy i.e a surgical procedure in which a cut is made through the skin to remove an entire lump or suspicious area so it can be checked under a microscope for signs of disease and found that she had fibrous histiocytoma which is very rare in the facial region.
The patient learned about his disease two months ago when she visited the OPD department of the hospital and got examined by Dr Kalyan Pal at the ENT department.
After identifying the disease, Dr Pal advised her to undergo a surgical procedure. The operation was done by a team of doctors led by Dr Pal a few days ago.
Explaining the diagnosis, Dr Pal informed millennium post "CT Scan of nose and PNS which were performed on the patient showed bilateral symmetrical soft tissue SOL anterior to both maxillary antrum. Operation excision biopsy was done under G.A. on December 1. Biopsy report suggested Histiocytic Lesion favouring fibrous Histiocytoma which is very rare in the facial region."
According to the hospital staff, the surgery was performed successfully on the patient following all the precautionary measures and the patient is reported to be doing well.
