Patna: In a distressing turn of events, a 28-year-old woman in Bihar's Samastipur lost her life allegedly after a compounder at a private hospital conducted sterilization surgery on her in the absence of a doctor.

The botched sterilization surgery resulted in the woman's death when the compounder moved her to a different medical facility without informing her family, as her condition worsened within an hour of entering the operating room.

It was alleged that the compounder convinced the family members that he could perform the surgery on the patient noting that no doctor was available at the hospital at that time.

The shocking incident took place in Musrigharari, a small town in the Samastipur district, about 80 km from the state capital Patna when the woman was brought to Anisha Health Care Centre on Patori Road around 9 am on Saturday. She was admitted to the hospital for sterilization surgery but no doctor was available to perform the surgery.

Speaking to TOI, Musrigharari station house officer Faizul Ansari said, “At first, the compounder and other staff told the family members that there was no doctor in the clinic. After some time, the compounder convinced the family members that he could perform the surgery and proceeded with the operation."

"She was taken to the operation theatre around 11 am after administration of saline water, but after an hour her condition deteriorated. She was then transferred to another private medical establishment, about 10km away from there, without the consent of her family members. She was declared dead at the other clinic, after which the woman’s body was brought back to the centre,” he added.

Meanwhile, the family members claimed that they discovered their patient was dead when they touched her body to check and it was cold. In addition, they claimed that the staff did not inform them about her condition.

Following this, the family members held a protest outside the Anisha Health Care demanding justice for her. They held the clinic’s owner-cum-doctor and the staff responsible for the alleged medical negligence and the death of the woman.

Demanding action against the doctor and the hospital staff, they filed a complaint at the police station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, the compounder is on the run and an investigation is underway to nab him.

Local police station in-charge Faizul Ansari told NDTV that they are investigating the matter and action will be taken against those responsible.
