Coimbatore: Govt permits ESI hospital to conduct Autopsy

Coimbatore: In an order issued by the health and family welfare department, permission to conduct an autopsy has been granted to the Government Medical College & ESIC Hospital at Singanallur. 

Taking note of the current situation in the district, the state government has granted permission to conduct the autopsy in the ESIC hospital. Since Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) was the only hospital in the district that conducted autopsies, ESIC hospital will now share the postmortem burden.

The order also stated that the government decided to divide the jurisdiction of both the hospital following the proposal of Coimbatore collector G S Sameeran, represented by the hospital dean Dr M Raveendran which will make the process easier and faster to handle.

CMCH will conduct postmortems at eight police stations in the city and 16 in the district while ESI Hospital will handle postmortem cases from seven police stations in the city and 19 in the district, including east and south zones, Pollachi, Valparai and Karumathampatty sub-divisions.

Due to the rising postmortem cases at CMCH, the workforce staff was facing difficulty to handle the situation since the cases were outnumbering the staff members at the hospital. However, ESI hospital on the other hand has enough staff members and facilities to share the load of the autopsy cases.

Dr C Manoharan, head of forensic medicine at ESI Hospital, said "The facility has six forensic experts and eight workers. We can handle 10 postmortem cases per day, given that we have enough workforce and infrastructure."

With the hope that the decision will reduce the mounting cases in the district and benefit the medical students at ESI hospital, Raveendran told TOI, " The government order has classified police stations in Coimbatore city and rural areas for CMCH and ESI Hospital in the form of medico-legal jurisdiction. So far, students of government and private medical colleges in Coimbatore had to attend postmortem classes at CMCH."

The postmortem process is mandatory for the academic purposes of the medical students and it has come to a great advantage for the students of ESI hospital.
