Delhi AIIMS to launch indoor navigation system for patients

New Delhi: The premier health institution, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, has decided to launch an intra-hospital navigation system to help patients and caregivers find their way for treatment in the sprawling campus.

The decision came into action after observing that most of the patients and caregivers who visit the campus for treatment find it difficult to navigate their way through the complex network buildings due to its various number of departments and labs. Therefore, to minimise the complications faced by the patients, the premier institute has decided to introduce the navigation app soon. 

An order issued by the AIIMS director Dr M Srinivas on Monday said, "More than 25,000 patients and caregivers visit AIIMS campus every day. AIIMS has campuses in Ansari Nagar, Jhajjar, Ballabhgarh, Trilok Puri and Ghaziabad. Sprawling campuses of Ansari Nagar and Jhajjar have many separate centers and they in turn house more than 58 departments with various labs, consultation rooms, operation rooms, etc."

"An indoor navigation system would significantly improve patients' and visitors' experience by providing real-time directions to their destination in the hospital. It would enable hospital staff to be more efficient and reduce the risk of patients or visitors getting lost, which could lead to delays in patient treatment," added the order. 

In this regard, the director has formed a five-member committee headed by Dr Vivek Tandon from the neurosurgery department, including Dr Vivek Gupta, Dr Vikas H, Superintendent engineer of AIIMS and Mr Satish from computer facility of the institute to ensure that the app is ready in three months. 

The director has instructed the committee to involve an experienced government organization, PSU or government autonomous body with a track record of implementing indoor navigation systems in seven days.

Talking about the navigation app, the AIIMS director said the navigation system will be user-friendly, capable to accommodate large user load at a time, available in Indian languages (especially Hindi), would work seamlessly indoors and outdoors and also between different blocks and floors of the campus, even in areas where mobile connectivity is low. The hospital has also listed that the system must be robust and safe from any cybersecurity threat as well as should be hosted on a cloud-based system.
