Delhi Govt to recruit 1,593 senior resident doctors

New Delhi: To fill 1,593 senior resident posts across its hospitals and medical institutions, the Delhi government has announced a major recruitment drive aimed at addressing doctor shortages in key specialities and improving patient care services. 

The Department of Health and Family Welfare has invited applications for regular appointments in various specialities and super-specialities, including anaesthesia, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, paediatrics, medicine, surgery, radiology, and orthopaedics. The last date to apply is November 10, 2025. Selection will be based on interviews, which may be held at Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) or its associated hospitals.

The tenure for selected candidates will initially be one year, including any prior service as a senior resident, either ad hoc or regular, in recognized institutions across India. Appointments may be extended annually up to three years, contingent on satisfactory work and reports from departmental heads. Officials emphasised that private practice will be strictly prohibited during the tenure.

The drive is being conducted through the Centralised Recruitment Committee, which was formed last year to bring transparency, uniformity, and speed to the selection process for doctors in Delhi government hospitals. "This is one of the largest hiring initiatives in recent years and will ensure uninterrupted services in high-demand departments," said a senior health department official, reports the TOI.

To fill acute shortages in specialities like radiology and anaesthesia, even doctors who have completed three years of senior residency but are willing to continue will be eligible for interviews.

The Centralised Recruitment Committee, approved by the Lieutenant Governor in September 2024, is chaired by the dean of MAMC and includes the Director-General of Health Services (DGHS), a senior representative from the services department, and other senior members. The committee oversees recruitment for both junior and senior residents across all Delhi government hospitals. Officials said the centralized model has streamlined coordination among hospitals and reduced bureaucratic delays.

Speaking to TOI, an official said, "Earlier, each hospital conducted separate interviews, which slowed down the process. The unified system now helps allocate doctors efficiently where they're most needed." According to officials, the recruitment drive covers multiple hospitals and specialities across the city.

Officials have directed hospitals to complete the interview and appointment process swiftly, aiming to fill all positions within this financial year. The health department expects this move to significantly boost manpower, improve patient care, and reduce waiting times in high-demand departments across Delhi.
