Hariharan, a 34-year-old resident of Kakkanad, found himself in a dire situation, needing to urinate every five minutes. Despite his best efforts, his condition persisted and began to impact both his physical and mental well-being. Overactive bladder is a condition that can usually be treated with medication. But in Hariharan's case, even though various medicines were given, the illness could not be cured.
Seeking a solution, Hariharan turned to Aster Medcity for treatment, where he met Dr Kishore T.A, Senior Consultant in Urology. Recognizing the complexity of Hariharan's case, the urology team at Aster Medcity explored alternative treatment options. Dr Sandeep Prabhakaran, Senior Consultant and Program Director in LASER Endourology, conducted tests and determined that InterStim Implantation Surgery, using an electronic device known as InterStim, could reverse the disease when medications were ineffective.
InterStim is surgically implanted, much like a pacemaker, to coordinate the sacral nerves responsible for bowel and bladder functions. The placement of InterStim required collaboration between the urology and neurosurgery departments, leading to the involvement of Dr Anup P Nair, a Consultant in Neurospine Surgery.
To ensure the success of the procedure, temporary testing was conducted before the permanent implantation. During the week-long trial, significant improvements were observed, with the interval between urinations increasing to two hours. Once the successful trial was completed, InterStim was permanently implanted. The surgery, performed under general anesthesia was carried out with utmost precision and care, ensuring a pain-free experience for Hariharan.
Post-surgery, Hariharan expressed his gratitude, stating that his urination interval returned to normal, and he was delighted to have his life restored to normalcy.
