New Delhi: A 67-year-old patient, recently underwent a successful laparoscopic cholecystectomy at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, after being diagnosed with a severe gall bladder infection.

The case posed significant challenges due to the patient's age, underlying health conditions, and the advanced stage of the infection.

The patient was initially admitted to a hospital in Lucknow, where it was discovered that the infection in his gall bladder had led to a rupture, spreading the infection into his abdomen and bloodstream. Given his medical history of high blood pressure, diabetes, myasthenia gravis, and osteoporosis, the surgical team deemed a definitive surgery too risky and potentially life-threatening. As an alternative, a drain pipe was inserted to remove the infection, which remained in place for four weeks.

In the pursuit of alternative treatment options, the patient decided to seek care at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals in New Delhi. Led by Dr Arun Prasad, a Senior Consultant in Gastrointestinal (GI), Bariatric, and Robotic Surgery at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, was performed. Recognizing the complexity of the case and the presence of co-morbidities, a multidisciplinary team of specialists in anesthesia, endocrinology, cardiology, and neurology collaborated to minimize potential complications and optimize the patient's surgical outcome. The surgery was a resounding success, and the patient was discharged from the hospital after a day spent in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Dr Arun Prasad, a Senior Consultant in Gastrointestinal (GI), Bariatric, and Robotic Surgery at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, "As a team of highly skilled doctors, we are delighted to have achieved a successful outcome for the patient, despite the challenges posed by his multiple health conditions.
