Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital successfully remove bilateral adrenal tumours from 51-year-old patient
New Delhi: Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, India's leading healthcare provider, removed bilateral adrenal tumours - the size of a large watermelon right side and a football size tumor on left side - from the abdomen of a 51-year-old man, making it the world's largest adrenal tumours removed so far.
The tumours were so huge that they made the patient’s abdomens protrude outwards and had displaced internal organs around them.
The tumours measuring 20 x 20 cm (right side) and 12 x 10 cm (left side) in size and weighing 4.5 kg and 1 kg each were located deep in the upper part of the abdomen at the top of the kidney where the adrenal is situated. Adrenal glands normally measure about 2 cm in an adult.
51-year-old man patient, Mr. Bivash Chandra Tivari is a resident of Bihar and presented to the hospital with complaints of loss of appetite, constipation for 2-2.5 months and abdominal distention. He had consulted doctors at hospitals in Patna where the tumours were detected. However, he was advised to consult Dr. Anant Kumar, Professor and Head, Department of Urology & Renal Transplant and Robotics at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket because of size & complexity of the tumor.
A team of doctors led by Dr Anant Kumar and his team at Max Hospital, Saket evaluated the patient and he was advised a bilateral adrenalectomy.
“The surgery was very challenging because the tumours has occupied the entire space in the patient’s abdomen & had displaced organs such as kidneys, liver, spleen, pancreas and intestines and there was hardly any space to maneuver. There was a risk of damaging vital organs during the surgery. We performed bilateral adrenalectomy and removed the tumours,” safely said Dr Kumar.
The surgery, which took 6 hours, was successful and the patient was discharged after 5 days post operation. Presently he is doing well.
