Dr D K Verma named Vice-Chancellor of Atal Medical and Research University

Shimla: Renowned surgeon and senior medical academician, Dr D.K. Verma, has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Atal Medical and Research University (AMRU), Mandi, Himachal Pradesh.

The appointment was notified on Wednesday by Himachal Pradesh Governor and Chancellor Kavinder Gupta under the provisions of the Himachal Pradesh Health Sciences Act, 2017, following the recommendation of the state government.

According to the official order, Dr. D.K. Verma's tenure will be three years from the date he assumes office or until he reaches the age of 70, whichever is earlier. During this period, he will be provided with salary, allowances, and other service benefits as per rules, reports Amar Ujala.

Born on December 8, 1959, Dr Verma is a native of Shimla. He completed his early education at DAV School, Lakkar Bazaar, Shimla, before pursuing higher medical studies at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla. He earned his MBBS, MD in Pharmacology, and MS in Surgery from the institution.

During his illustrious career, Dr Verma served as Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery at IGMC Shimla and Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar Government Medical College, Nahan. 

Dr Verma has also done a Commonwealth fellowship in Endo-Urology from Southampton General Hospital, UK. He also remained Principal of Lal Bahadur Shastri Medical College, Ner Chowk, reports Himachal Guardian.

AMRU, which had been functioning without a regular Vice Chancellor for an extended period, now has permanent leadership. The appointment is expected to expedite the university's administrative processes and strengthen academic governance.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that Punjab Medical Education and Research Secretary Manjit Singh Brar has been given the officiating charge of Vice-Chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) following the completion of the tenure of Dr Rajeev Sood. Brar will continue to hold his existing responsibilities while serving as the acting Vice-Chancellor until a regular appointment is made.
