Gauhati Medical College Hospital: Patient monitor explodes inside MICU, 10 patients shifted

Guwahati: Panic gripped the Medical Intensive Care Unit 2 (MICU 2) at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after a patient monitor exploded inside the unit late on Sunday night.
Following the incident, around 10 patients from MICU 2 were shifted to MICU 1 and the General ICU as a precautionary measure, hospital authorities said.

According to news reports, a patient had died in connection with the incident. However, the GMCH superintendent denied any link between the patient's death and the monitor explosion.
Speaking to India Today NE, the superintendent said the patient died at around 11 pm, while the monitor exploded at approximately 11.50 pm. The hospital had also issued the patient's death certificate before the incident, the superintendent said.
The superintendent further said the deceased patient's body was kept at the hospital overnight as the family faced difficulties arranging transportation at night due to the higher cost.
The remaining patients were reported to be safe, and the situation was brought under control following the incident.
A short circuit is suspected to be one possible cause of the monitor explosion. However, the exact cause of the incident has not yet been established.
The incident has raised concerns over the safety of electrical and medical equipment in critical-care areas. Further details are awaited as authorities assess the circumstances surrounding the explosion.

The institute performed open-heart surgeries on a seven-year-old child and a 47-year-old woman from Assam, both suffering from congenital heart defects involving a hole in the heart, according to an official release on Thursday. The surgeries were successfully performed on September 8 under the leadership of Professor Colonel Dr Ashok Puranik, Executive Director of AIIMS.
