Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital all set to begin Radiotherapy unit on July 1

Mohali: The Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCHRC) in Medicity, New Chandigarh (Mullanpur) will soon have a radiotherapy unit operational from July 1st.

On December 30, 2013, The then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone of this 300-bed state-of-the-art cancer institute and the construction of the institute was completed in January, this year. The hospital is built at a cost of Rs 400 crore on 50 acres of land. Punjab government to the Department of Atomic Energy allotted the budget and the land for the institute.

The hospital caters to the entire northern region, comprising Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. First phase services at the hospital include radiology, CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, X-ray, mammography, medical oncology, chemotherapy, day-care ward, pathology and lab facilities and minor operation theatre, besides initiating OPD services such as surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, palliative care and preventive oncology have already started.

Around 100 patients will be able to get treatment at the radiotherapy unit. Due to the recent establishment of the hospital, the footfall in the hospital is less than usual. However, camps are being held in remote areas to aware people of the early detection of cancer. The camps give the people insights into the treatments and kinds of cancer available.

The state government introduced the Medicity initiative under the public-private partnership (PPP) mode. It is the centre of top-class medical hospitals and provides quality treatments catering to the patients of the entire northern region. It is spread across 258 acres of land which includes Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, Chaitanya Paediatrics and Gynae Hospital, Grewal Eyes Hospital, and Max Multispeciality Hospital. However, the project also promotes medical tourism.

A senior officer of the district administration told TNIE, "The project is under the Union government and while the first phase of the hospital has started, the new unit of radiotherapy will be inaugurated on July 1."
