Hyderabad: Introducing new facilities to ensure that cancer patients receive top-class treatment, Health Minister, T Harish Rao inaugurated several state-of-the-art modern facilities at MNJ Cancer Hospital.

In order to facilitate the smooth functioning of the hospital, seven modular operation theatres, a modern washing machine to clean hospital linen and a modern kitchen were established with over ₹30 crores.

Because the hospital only had 3 operation theatres, it had a long queue of patients awaiting major procedures. It could only perform 1500 major procedures and 4,000 minor procedures each year.

However, following the upgradation to additional 7 modular operation theatres, the surgeons will now be able to conduct 5,000 major surgeries and over 7,000 minor surgeries annually which will reduce the waiting time of the patients.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Rao said a robotic operation theatre will be set up at a cost of ₹30 crores and would also become available in a month's time.

Minister for Home Md. Mahamood Ali and Nampally MLA Jaffar Hussain were also present.

The Minister stated that MNJ Cancer Hospital would have the first oncology special nursing school in the country and it would be opened soon.

He said that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted approval for admissions in five out of eight medical colleges and he was hopeful of getting permission for the other three soon.

Overall, 1,200 additional MBBS seats will be added in government medical colleges of Telangana from this academic year, he said.

The Minister told Telangana today, "We are also in the process of developing amenities for PG medical students at a cost of Rs 4 crore. The construction work of 350-bedded new MNJ Hospital block in collaboration with Aurobindo Pharma is underway, which will increase the total number of hospital beds to 750," Minister said.

"Under Aarogyasri, in 2021-22, we have spent Rs 111 crore for cancer treatment. Overall, since statehood, under Aarogyasri, Telangana has incurred an expenditure of Rs 750 crore for the treatment of cancer patients," he added.

Palliative care centres have been established in all district hospitals for cancer patients at the final stage, and Alana vehicles were introduced to provide treatment to chronic illness patients at their doorstep. He said 200 cancer patients were identified at mobile screening camps held at 20 locations and are receiving treatment.
