JIPMER Plans 50-Bed Hospital in Mahe Region
Puducherry: Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan announced that the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, is in the process of setting up a new hospital in the Mahe region.
Speaking at a public gathering following the virtual inauguration of the renovated Mahe Railway Station, the Lt. Governor said that the new medical facility is part of the institute's expansion plans.
He mentioned having recently met the Jipmer Director, who informed him about the institute’s plans to establish a hospital similar to Jipmer’s 50-bed facility in the Karaikal region.

According to the Hindu, touching upon the development activities in Mahe, the Lt. Governor said the Pondicherry University was interested in opening a community college at the enclave. “These announcements could be made during the Prime Minister’s visit to Puducherry,” he said.
The Lt. Governor also stated that works worth approximately ₹35 crore are currently underway in Mahe. One of the key projects is the renovation of Mahe Railway Station, which is being carried out under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, a Central government initiative aimed at modernising railway infrastructure across the country.
These new initiatives underscore a strategic push to strengthen healthcare, education, and infrastructure in the Mahe enclave, which is administratively part of the Union Territory of Puducherry.
