Karnataka to Improve Rural ICU Care with New Specialist Doctor Posts

Bengaluru: To strengthen critical care services across the state, the Karnataka government has announced the creation of 185 specialist doctor posts for Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in district and taluk hospitals. 

According to a government order issued on Tuesday, two specialist doctors (physician/anesthetist) will be appointed at each of the 19 district hospitals, while one specialist doctor will be posted at each of the 147 taluk hospitals. This strategic deployment aims to enhance the availability of skilled professionals in (ICUs) across the state.

According to TOI, in its proposal, the health dept said that it needed a total of 17 staff members (medical and paramedical) to run an ICU in a district hospital and 12 staff members for ICUs in taluk hospitals. These new posts have been created to accommodate the requests for physicians/anesthetists in the proposal.

In a related development, Tele ICU systems have previously been installed at the Trauma Care Centre of Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru and Ballari District Hospital, aiming to revolutionize emergency care delivery in remote regions.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that the patients in emergency will now get immediate medical treatment from specialist doctors as the Karnataka government has installed a Tele ICU system at the Trauma Care Centre of Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru and Ballari District Hospital. The system was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. This Tele ICU programme is based on a hub and spoke model. Hub will be connected to the spoke (Taluk) Hospitals by highly modernised technology and dedicated internet. This system, connected to the Taluk hospitals in Bengaluru City and Ballari district, will provide a significant benefit to patients in rural areas.
