Kerala: MCH nurse manhandled by patient bystander over delay in administering drip, bystander arrested
Thiruvananthapuram: A female nurse of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital (MCH) was allegedly assaulted by a bystander over a delay in administering a drip to the patient. The accused was later arrested by the Medical college police.
Interestingly, it came to light that despite the implementation of only one bystander with a patient in ICUs and wards at government medical college hospitals in the state, such an incident has taken place at the hospital again.
The Medical College police arrested the man, who is currently in police custody on the grounds of misbehaving and assaulting the nurse on duty at the hospital.
The attack took place on Sunday night at around 4:30 pm when the on-duty nurse was checking on a patient in the 28th ward. The patient admitted to the hospital in the 28th ward is the uncle of the bystander. The bystander, a native of Poovar present at the ward, accused the nurse of neglecting his uncle.
He began abusing the nurse at first and then tried to assault her by grabbing her hand. The bystander alleged that the nurse delayed administering the drip to the patient. Before the situation goes overboard, bystanders of other patients directed him to leave the ward, Kaumudi reports.
After the information spread to other hospital staff, they rushed to the 28th ward to stop the incident. Upon their arrival, the accused bystander was handed over to the medical college police.
An FIR was registered against the accused based on the complaint filed by the nurse. Later, the medical college police arrested the accused.
However, the incident sparked anger among the nurses associated with Kerala Government Nurse Union. The association called for a protest on Monday at the hospital campus, demanding action against the accused bystander.
Moreover, this is not the first time that such incidents have been reported at the MCH. Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about the brutal assault on a female Neurosurgeon at the Thiruvananthapuram medical college hospital who had been allegedly kicked by a bystander in the lower abdomen over the death of a patient.
