Kollam: A special project for cancer treatment might come up at the Neendakara taluk hospital under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) with the approval of the Central government.

Union Minister for Women & Child Development and Minority Affairs Smriti Irani, in a recent meeting in Delhi, had given assurance that the cancer facilities would be set up soon.

The project, worth Rs 30 crore, is a brainchild of the Thiruvananthapuram Regional Cancer Centre, which would provide more facilities for cancer treatment at the hospital. A linear accelerator machine for radiation and a device used for cancer treatment and other required infrastructure would be installed under the project.

The Ministry of Minority Affairs would submit the project before the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for the latter to consider it. N.K. Premachandran, Minister of Parliament from Kollam constituency, told the Hindu, "The final approval of the project will be subject to the instructions and recommendations of the Ministry of Health. The project’s estimated cost will vary as per the directions of the Ministry."

The state government had suggested the central government include the project under the PMJVK. The Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK), a central government scheme, seeks to support states/UTs to provide better socio-economic infrastructure facilities to minority communities, particularly in the field of education, health & skill development. Under the scheme, funds would be provided to the states/UTs for sharing patterns for infrastructure projects.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about an Rs 88.21 crore project for the renovation and comprehensive development of ESIC Model Hospital, Asramam in Kollam. As part of the new project, a number of facilities would be established at the hospital, including a solar system to ensure hot water, a waste treatment plant, CCTV surveillance, a RO plant for clean drinking water, a softener plant to remove harmful iron, calcium, and magnesium from drinking water, an incinerator, a modular operating room, illuminated boards, a Theatre Sterile Surgical Unit (TSSU), and a Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD).
