Agartala: A 17-year-old schoolgirl narrowly escaped a life-threatening medical error at Madhupur Primary Health Centre (PHC) when she was allegedly given the wrong medication by a duty doctor.

The incident occurred on January 31 when the student from Kamalasagar Debipur was admitted to the PHC with a fever. According to news reports, the duty doctor reportedly gave the patient four tablets intended for a heart patient, instead of the prescribed fever medicine. The girl immediately lost consciousness, creating chaos at the hospital.

Angered by the incident, relatives of the patient reportedly vandalised hospital property in protest. The patient’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and she was rushed to Tripura Medical College and Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital at Hapania. Doctors there later confirmed that her life was saved narrowly after emergency treatment.

Following the uproar, the district health department launched an investigation. Bishalgarh SDMO confirmed that negligence occurred and that the wrong medicine was administered. As per disciplinary action, the duty doctor was transferred to Narsingarh Mental Health Hospital.

Residents welcomed the action but questioned why the duty nurse who handed over the wrong medicine was not held accountable.

The incident has also exposed a severe shortage of doctors at Madhupur Health Centre. Only one physician remains on duty, forced to work round-the-clock to meet patient needs. Meanwhile, another senior doctor has reportedly gone on leave, despite being aware of the understaffed situation, drawing criticism from the local community.

Speaking to Tripura Chronicle, residents of Kamalasagar assembly constituency say they are struggling with healthcare services due to the crisis. They have appealed to the state health minister and chief minister to remove negligent doctors and appoint at least two qualified physicians at Madhupur Hospital to ensure proper treatment facilities.
