Manipur CHC runs on solar power for 4 years amid infrastructure gaps

Imphal: An inspection of the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Nungba in Manipur's Noney district has highlighted major infrastructure and staffing concerns, including the lack of a regular electricity supply for nearly four years, non-functional diagnostic equipment and shortages of healthcare personnel.

The inspection was carried out by members of the Peoples' United Youth Alliance (PUYA) and the Foothills Naga Coordinating Committee (FNCC) as part of their ongoing review of public healthcare facilities across the state.  

According to the inspection findings, the CHC has been operating solely on solar power after its electricity connection was reportedly disconnected due to non-payment of outstanding electricity bills. While the solar system has allowed the hospital to continue providing basic healthcare services, high-power equipment such as the X-ray machine remains non-functional because of inadequate electricity. 

The inspection team also found that the oxygen plant at the facility was not operational and the ultrasound machine had not yet been installed. According to hospital staff, a child was recently delivered in candlelight due to the lack of electricity supply.    

The CHC reportedly has three doctors and eight nurses on its rolls. However, the inspection team alleged that six of the eight nurses currently working at the facility were substitute staff. Residents also highlighted the absence of specialists such as a gynaecologist, physician and paediatrician, stating that the hospital serves Nungba and several surrounding villages.  

According to The Sangai Express, representatives of the inspecting organisations urged the Health Department to improve infrastructure and ensure adequate deployment of doctors and nurses in hill districts. They also raised concerns over the continued shortage of staff and basic facilities at public healthcare institutions serving remote communities.
