Meghalya Cabinet Approves AYUSH Medical Services Rules 2025
New AYUSH Service Rules Approved in Meghalaya
Shillong: In a move to strengthen the traditional system of medicines, the Meghalaya Cabinet on Thursday approved the Meghalaya AYUSH Medical Service Rules. This move is aimed at promoting alternative systems of medicine such as Ayurveda, Yoga, and Naturopathy across the state.
The AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy) framework is a national initiative aimed at promoting alternative systems of medicine while ensuring that their practitioners operate under formal service rules and standards. Meghalaya had earlier sought assistance from the Centre in 2016 to establish a dedicated AYUSH Directorate.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that the Meghalaya government sought financial assistance from the Centre for setting up of AYUSH Directorate in the state to promote alternative medicines. The government also asked the Centre for reservation of at least 18 seats for local indigenous students at the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy (NEIAH), which was officially inaugurated. "It (directorate) will also help in improving the quality of teachers of various AYUSH systems, ensuring affordable AYUSH services and drugs which are safe...", Health Minister Roshan Warjri said at the inaugural address of the NEIAH held at Mawdiangdiang.
The newly approved rules clearly define guidelines for appointments, service conditions, and the regulation of medical professionals working within the AYUSH system. With this approval, Meghalaya joins several other Indian states that have formalized service rules for AYUSH practitioners. The initiative aligns with broader national efforts to mainstream traditional medicine and enhance healthcare accessibility.
Speaking to the Hub Network, Cabinet Minister and government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh noted that these alternative medical practices have gained popularity in recent years. “The traditional system of medicine, like Ayurvedic, Yoga, and Naturopathy, has gained traction, and people are now looking at them as alternatives to current medical practices,” he said.
