Mumbai: In a shocking incident, a fire broke out at Bhatia Hospital in South Mumbai's Grant Road on Monday afternoon, causing brief panic among patients and staff. At least eight fire engines, along with additional firefighting vehicles and equipment, were deployed to control the blaze.

The fire was reported at around 1:35 PM, prompting an immediate response from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB).

According to officials, the fire was confined to electrical wiring and installations in the CT-MRI unit located on the ground floor of the hospital. Although heavy smoke was reported in the affected area, the fire brigade acted promptly and managed to bring the blaze under control before it could spread further. Officials said the fire was brought under control within 10–15 minutes and completely extinguished by approximately 3 PM.

Emergency response teams, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, BEST, ward staff and 108 ambulance services, were mobilised as a precautionary measure. No injuries have been reported so far, reports TOI.

Special precautions were taken for the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), located directly above the affected area. With smoke posing a potential risk to the newborns, firefighters and hospital staff carefully moved the infants to safer wards.

Speaking to Mumbai Now, a fire officer said, “If the smoke had increased, it could have affected the babies. So we carried out a stage-wise shifting to ensure their safety instead of waiting for the situation to worsen.”

While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, officials suspect it originated from an electrical fault.
