Mumbai: The Seven Hills Hospital has decided to conduct a study identifying the new symptoms of Covid in patients who are already infected with the disease, stating that they are experiencing diarrhoea and hybrid fever symptoms.

The study will focus on the pathological characteristics of this new pattern by conducting a study on the infected patients admitted to the hospital.

Early Covid waves of infection with Delta variants patients experienced symptoms like breathing issues, but after the mutated Omicron variant was introduced, symptoms such as gut-related illnesses and high fevers developed. However, doctors are saying that the new symptoms may be related to something new that will hit the country soon.

This week, cases of two new variants have been detected in the country. BA.4 and BA.5 which are said to be the most transmissible subvariants of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus have been detected in Maharashtra.

Apart from diarrhoea patients are also experiencing stomach cramps or pain in the abdomen region. This pain is often associated with diarrhoea. Doctors have also said that people are experiencing nausea and vomiting due to the abdominal issues.

Dr Smita Chavhan, additional dean of Seven Hills Hospital told The Indian Express, "Viruses keep mutating and the infection pattern also changes. So, it is essential to understand how these changes are happening at the epidemiological level. Like we have done earlier, we will conduct a study on the profiles of the patients and their related symptoms."

"Earlier, several studies have pointed out that Omicron patients often complain of six gut-related illnesses – nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, heartburn and bloating. This time, people are coming up with diarrhoea but symptoms are milder now. Cases of hospitalisation have been way fewer" said Dr Sunil Jain, consultant and head of the emergency at Jaslok Hospital.

In 2020, a COVID-19 hospital was constructed as part of the Seven Hills Hospital group in Mumbai City, India. It was constructed by Reliance Industries Limited for COVID-19 patients. It is the first dedicated COVID-19 hospital in India and is managed by Reliance Industries Limited for SevenHills Hospital Group.
