Mumbai: In a shocking incident, a portion of the ceiling plaster collapsed inside the outpatient department (OPD) of Gokuldas Tejpal (GT) Hospital and Government Medical College in south Mumbai on Thursday, injuring a senior resident doctor.

According to the news reports, the incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. when a portion of the ceiling directly above a fan gave way, falling on the doctor. A colleague present in the same room narrowly escaped without injury. Fortunately, no patients were in the OPD during the incident.

The injured doctor was immediately taken for medical evaluation, including a CT scan, and required four to five stitches for a head wound.

“I have been working in this OPD for quite some time. This is the first such incident, and it was quite shocking. I’m fine now, and the PWD will investigate and address the issue to ensure it doesn’t recur,” said the injured doctor, requesting anonymity, reports
Hindustan Times.

Another resident doctor pointed out that while the hospital’s infrastructure is generally well-maintained, the ageing building warrants a full structural audit. The doctor explained that ongoing construction two to three floors above, along with monsoon-related waterlogging, may have weakened parts of the ceiling.

Following the collapse, officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) and GT Hospital Dean Dr. Jitendra Sankpal conducted an inspection of the site.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, GT Hospital dean Dr. Jitendra Sankpal said that repair work has already begun. “There was no major incident, only a minor plaster and frame collapse, which has been fixed. There are no other infrastructure concerns,” he said.
