Pimpri Chinchwad: With an aim to reduce the burden on Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH), a number of civic-run hospitals in Pimpri Chinchwad are witnessing a make-over as new departments are being set up to improve their functioning.

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has made its budgetary provision according to that. The New Talera Hospital would be equipped with multi-specialty facilities, the Thergaon hospital would be equipped with a trauma center, an ophthalmology department and also an ENT surgery department, and Akurdi civic hospital would be equipped with a dialysis facility as well as an orthopedic department.

Civic chief Shekhar Singh said that in addition to these, a 750 bedded multi-specialty hospital at Moshi providing MBBS education has been proposed. Singh added that there is also a plan to turn the old Talera hospital into a geriatric hospital, and the new one would be equipped with multi-specialty facilities.

He said, "We are also working on improving the screening and diagnostics through artificial intelligence."

Speaking about the upcoming development to the TOI, an official from New Thergaon Hospital said, "We will require more manpower and operating theatres to upgrade the current facilities offered at the hospital. At present, around 1,000 to 1,100 patients visit the OPD department, which is almost two-thirds of what the YCMH gets and we have a permanent staff of 59 (including doctors, nurses and ward boys) and a contractual staff of around 300 people." While stating that they have two operating theatres (OT), the official added that they need a minimum of eight OTs and varied experts to turn the hospital into a trauma centre.

Activist Raju Sawale, however, stated that simply making provisions would not be very effective. He said, "The civic body has made many such provisions in the past, which have remained on paper. We need to see concrete action."

Meanwhile, a dedicated eye hospital was inaugurated a few days back whose OPD has already started functioning. The eye hospital would reportedly reduce the burden on YCMH's eye department.
