New Delhi: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has clarified that there is currently no proposal to establish a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, despite growing demands from the region. The response was given in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on February 10, 2026.

While acknowledging the growing need for better healthcare infrastructure in western Uttar Pradesh, the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, highlighted that two AIIMS institutes have already been established in Uttar Pradesh, one in Raebareli and another in Gorakhpur, both of which are fully operational.

However, to strengthen super-speciality healthcare in Meerut, the government has initiated the upgradation of Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College under a Centre-State cost-sharing model. The project involves the construction of a 200-bedded Super-Specialty Block housing eight departments: Cardiology, Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS), Pediatric Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Nephrology, Burn & Reconstruction Surgery, and Radiotherapy.

The reply came in response to a question raised by Dr. Laxmikant Bajpayee in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

The minister asked whether the Government is aware that establishing an AIIMS in Meerut is a critical need, driven by the city’s role as a major hub for western Uttar Pradesh, its growing population, and its strategic location and excellent connectivity with neighbouring districts and States.

He also seeks to know whether it is a fact that establishing AIIMS at Meerut will decongest and reduce patient burden on AIIMS, New Delhi, and fulfil regional demand in western Uttar Pradesh, with a massive population relying on the overloaded AIIMS, New Delhi, for super-specialty treatment; and

Furthermore, he inquired, if so, whether the Government proposes to establish AIIMS at Meerut on priority?

In response, Shri Prataprao Jadhav cited, under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), to date, the establishment of 22 All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has been approved in various States/UTs in the country, including 2 AIIMS in Uttar Pradesh, one at Raebareli and the other at Gorakhpur. Both Institutes are functional.

Further, under another component of PMSSY, upgradation of Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College in Meerut has been undertaken on Centre-State cost sharing by way of construction of 200 bedded Super Speciality Block having 8 departments, i.e., Cardiology, CTVS, Pediatric Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Nephrology, Burn & Reconstruction Surgery and Radiotherapy. Under PMSSY, there is no proposal for the establishment of a new AIIMS at Meerut in Uttar Pradesh.
