Pudukkottai: Tamil Nadu has reached a significant milestone in its public healthcare system, with all posts in government hospitals now filled and no vacancies remaining. Health Minister Ma Subramanian announced this on Saturday while inaugurating new facilities at the Pudukkottai Government Medical College Hospital.

According to the news reports, the minister noted that nearly 40% of posts in the health sector were vacant when the DMK government came to power. Over the past five years, around 40,000 positions have been filled through various recruitment initiatives, ensuring that all medical posts are now occupied.

Highlighting the state’s efforts in healthcare, Subramanian said that about one lakh people are diagnosed with cancer every year in Tamil Nadu. To address this, the government is expanding cancer treatment centres across the state. As part of these efforts, a new cancer radiotherapy centre equipped with a telecobalt treatment machine was inaugurated at the Pudukkottai Government Medical College Hospital, built at a cost of Rs 5.36 crore.

In addition, a 20-bed extension block at the Keeranur Government Hospital, constructed at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore, was also opened to the public

The minister further stated that over two crore people have benefited from the Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam scheme so far

Subramanian said the government’s focus has been to encourage people to seek treatment in government hospitals, and claimed the effort has achieved more than 50% success. He added that the number of patients visiting government hospitals has increased compared to the previous AIADMK regime, reports TNIE.

On preventive healthcare, he highlighted the state’s initiative to administer the HPV vaccine to 14-year-old girls, which has already covered around 3.38 lakh children.

According to TOI, "The Union govt has said it will also implement the scheme. Besides, as the state govt's Innuyir kaapom scheme, in which beneficiaries will get Rs 2 lakh, the Union govt has introduced a scheme to give Rs 1.5 lakh. Similarly, the Centre has been picking up cues from other TN's schemes as well," Subhramanian said.
