Tirunelveli: A protest erupted at the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TvMCH) on Friday after the relatives of a woman who delivered a stillborn baby accused the hospital staff of medical negligence.

The woman, a resident of Vannikonenthal, began experiencing labor pains on Sunday. Initially, she visited a nearby Primary Health Centre, which referred her to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for further care. According to the relatives, despite her several complaints, doctors allegedly did not treat her, and nurses in the ward allegedly abused her with offensive language.

Frustrated by the lack of proper care, the woman insisted that her husband take her to a private hospital. However, the private facility reportedly sent her back to TvMCH, where she delivered a stillborn baby on Thursday night. Following the incident, her relatives expressed their outrage by staging a protest inside the hospital campus demanding accountability and action against the responsible health personnel.

In response to the medical negligence allegations, Dr. Balasubramanian, the Medical Superintendent of TvMCH, stated that the woman's relatives had taken her to the private hospital despite his staff's advice.

Speaking to TNIE, he said, "When she was at TvMCH, the baby had a pulse inside the womb. However, we heard that the private hospital doctors did not detect a pulse when they examined her. She later delivered a stillborn baby at TvMCH. It was our doctors who treated her when she delivered her first baby seven years ago."

When asked about the allegations of nurses abusing Madhubala, Dr Balasubramanian said he would conduct an inquiry and take action against the staff, if found guilty.
