Punjab: Nakodar Civil Hospital struggles with shortage of specialist doctors

Nakodar: The staff at the Nakodar Civil Hospital in Punjab are reportedly working under a lot of pressure due to the shortage of specialist doctors at the hospital. 

According to Senior Medical Officer (SMO) Dr Sanjiv Kumar, there are 14 posts of medical officers in 50-bed hospitals and the posts of surgeon, ENT specialists, radiologists, anaesthetist, pathologist, and two posts of medical officer are lying vacant in the hospital. 

He further stated that they had reported the situation regarding the vacant posts to the civil surgeon as well. The hospital staff which caters to more than 500 outdoor patients for treatment, are now buckling under pressure due to the shortage of doctors. 

According to the SMO, out of the 77 sanctioned posts of medical and para-medical staff in the hospital, 36 posts are lying vacant. Further, ten posts of staff nurses and 11 posts of class IV employees are also lying vacant, as per a media report in the Tribune India. 

In addition to that, four of the hospital employees are working on a deputation basis in other hospitals and there is also a requirement for security staff at the hospital, said the SMO. 

Further, there is a requirement for a scan machine and the scan expert has also resigned. Meanwhile, the medicine supply is also reported to be irregular in the hospital. 

Medical Dialogues team had last reported about the decision of Guru Nanak Dev (GND) Hospital to act against agents and touts from private diagnostic labs and chemists who fraudulently sell medicines and lure patients to private hospitals. The hospital authorities had issued a notice banning their entry into the premises of the hospital. The notice was put up at various premises of the hospital with the warning that the agents would be taken to the police if they were found within the hospital premises.
