Administrative Apathy Blamed as Rat Bites Junior Doctor in Eye Ward

Ahmedabad: In a shocking incident at Sola Civil Hospital, a junior doctor was reportedly bitten on the eye by a rat inside the hospital’s eye ward, raising serious hygiene concerns at one of the city’s major public healthcare institutions.

According to the news reports, the incident follows repeated complaints from interns and hospital staff over several days about unhygienic conditions, pest infestations, and glaring mismanagement. Resident doctors claim that they are routinely required to stay overnight in wards even when there are no emergencies in their department, and allege that weekly offs are not provided, leaving them fatigued and overworked.

“We are fed up with the authoritarian attitude of seniors,” students said, adding that the lack of rest and enforced overnight stays are “completely unjustified”, reports Gujarat Samachar.

Doctors also point to the lack of basic facilities, including RO drinking water and air-conditioning in wards. Despite these deficiencies, authorities allegedly failed to take corrective action, with some residents claiming attempts to downplay the incident.

Government hospitals have long struggled with issues such as poor sanitation, pest infestation, overcrowding, and lack of maintenance. However, this incident starkly underscores the extent of administrative apathy, reports Vibes of India.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage among the medical community and the public. Many are demanding a thorough investigation and immediate remedial action to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
