Gonda: Government medical college in Gonda district has come under sharp criticism after a shocking video from its orthopaedics ward went viral on social media, showing rats roaming freely near patients’ beds and even close to the oxygen pipeline, raising serious concerns over hygiene and patient safety.

In a recent post on X, the Congress party highlighted alarming conditions at Gonda Medical College in Uttar Pradesh. According to the post, a ward meant for patients has been overrun by rats, which scamper freely across the space. Fat and thin, round and plump, the rodents move about as if they own the place, making it feel less like a medical facility for humans and more like for pests.

As per the news reports, the viral video recorded by a patient admitted to the ward shows other patients lying on their beds as rodents move around openly in the background.

Taking immediate cognisance of the viral video, Gonda District Magistrate Priyanka Niranjan reprimanded the medical college principal, Professor Dhananjay Shrikant Kotastane, and directed swift corrective measures. In response, the college administration carried out pest control spraying in the orthopaedics ward and other hospital areas.

Speaking to the Free Press Journal, Professor Kotastane stated that rats are attracted due to food brought by patients’ relatives. He assured that no negligence regarding patient safety would be tolerated and that an inquiry has been ordered to fix responsibility.

This incident has once again brought attention to the urgent need for stricter hygiene protocols and regular inspections in government-run medical institutions.
