Robotic surgery soon at RIMS Ranchi, Infrastructure expansion plan approved

Ranchi: Robotic surgery is set to be introduced at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) after its governing council approved the proposal and directed officials to expedite the implementation process. The council also approved the procurement of 200 ventilators and cleared several infrastructure development projects aimed at improving patient care.

The decisions were taken during the governing board meeting chaired by Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari. The minister said the focus would remain on strengthening patient care, medical education and healthcare infrastructure through timely execution of approved projects.

“Our priority is to place RIMS among the country’s best govt medical institutions. There will be no compromise on patient care, quality of treatment or medical education. Every decision was taken keeping public interest and future healthcare needs in mind,” Ansari said, reports TOI. 

According to the news reports, among the major approvals, the council decided to expedite the launch of robotic surgery services at the institute. It also approved the purchase of 200 ventilators, installation of smart classrooms, reconstruction of the orthopaedic ward, establishment of a modern help desk with 15 support staff, strengthening of the blood bank and speeding up the procurement of a radiotherapy machine for the oncology department.

The health minister also directed officials to renovate all toilets across the campus within a month, redesign the hospital’s main entrance, and conduct technical assessments of buildings and floors that require reconstruction.

Speaking to TOI, RIMS director Dr Dipendra Kumar Sinha said the institute would begin the robotic surgery programme in a phased manner. “A dedicated operation theatre will be developed for robotic surgeries. We will begin by piloting robotic procedures in general surgery and gradually expand the facility to other specialities after evaluating the outcomes,” Sinha said.

The governing council also approved several other initiatives, including the establishment of a rehabilitation centre, strengthening of genetic screening facilities for newborns, exploring a public-private partnership (PPP) model for stem cell preservation, and assessing infrastructure requirements following the increase in MBBS seats to 250.

Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari stated that elevating RIMS to the ranks of the country's leading government medical institutions is a priority for the government. He directed officials to implement all approved plans in a timely manner, stating that negligence in development work will not be tolerated, reports Jagran.
