Thoothukudi: In a disturbing incident, the Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital’s (TKMCH) corridor roof in front of the gastroenterology ward collapsed on Thursday afternoon during ongoing renovation work, injuring a construction worker.

According to hospital sources, the incident occurred in the corridor of the 35-year-old building, which was undergoing renovations after patients were shifted to another area. The roof segment, measuring approximately 10 feet by 12 feet, fell on the worker, who was immediately taken to the hospital’s emergency ward. Hospital authorities confirmed that his condition is stable.

Hospital doctors have raised concerns over the Public Works Department’s (PWD) handling of maintenance work at TKMCH, alleging a long-standing “indifferent attitude” despite repeated appeals and reminders.

Speaking to the Hindu, the doctors complain, “The drainage channels within the campus of TKMCH are now half-filled with silt. We sent reminders to desilt the sewage channels within the TKMCH campus before the start of the northeast monsoon. No action has been taken till today. Construction of the sanitary complex near the obstetrics and gynaecology ward is dragging on even after six months. We sent a memorandum for the removal of the 260-bed ward and the dialysis unit buildings, which are fragile. The roof of the rooms beneath the toilets are leaking for several months. Trees are growing on the TKMCH buildings. None of these appeals from TKMCH has been heard and translated into action.”

They also stated that the officials concerned must ensure the lifts being installed provide smooth and safe transfer of patients between the wards and operation theatres. Furthermore, they emphasized that the renovation of the auditorium, being carried out with Rs 1 crore from the Corporate Social Responsibility fund of a thermal power generation unit, should be completed to the highest quality standards.
