SHRC Steps In to Address Elevator Shortage at Perumbavoor Taluk Hospital

Kochi: Patients, staff, and visitors at Perumbavoor Taluk Hospital are facing severe challenges due to the lack of elevator facilities. In the absence of an elevator, patients are being carried on stretchers up to the second floor, causing immense discomfort and posing serious health risks.

The issue has sparked concerns among local authorities, prompting the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) to intervene. SHRC Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas has called for immediate action to resolve the problem.

According to TOI, the commission suggested appointing a senior officer, not below the rank of deputy district medical officer (DMO), to conduct an immediate inspection at the taluk hospital. Based on the inspection, the director of the health department, DMO, and taluk hospital superintendent should address the complaint without delay, he said.

Thomas also directed the DMO to look into the incomplete construction work at the hospital and provide a report to the commission within three weeks. The report is expected to include a timeline for the completion of essential construction work and provide a clear explanation for the delay. Furthermore, he instructed the taluk hospital superintendent to submit a special report within the same timeframe.

In addition, the Director of Health Services and the Perumbavoor Municipal Secretary have also been directed to submit reports within three weeks, ensuring that all relevant authorities are involved in addressing the issue. To facilitate discussions and progress, representatives from the DMO, Director of Health Services, Taluk Hospital Superintendent, and the Municipal Secretary are required to attend a hearing at the Ernakulam Government Guest House on April 22.
