Jaipur: Following the death of a 23-year-old pregnant woman at Sawai Man Singh (SMS Hospital) in Jaipur, Rajasthan, an investigating committee has confirmed that she died after being transfused with the wrong blood type. The committee has held five junior staff members responsible, while the senior officials supervising them have been effectively exonerated.

According to the news reports, the woman was admitted to SMS Hospital on May 12 in critical condition with extremely low haemoglobin, miliary tuberculosis, and multiple health complications reportedly received a blood transfusion on May 20 after tests on May 19 indicated her blood type as A+. However, a subsequent test allegedly revealed her blood type was B+, raising concerns of a possible transfusion mismatch. She passed away on May 22 following severe reactions, including haematuria, tachycardia, fever, and chills.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that in a tragic incident at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur, a 23-year-old pregnant woman from Tonk district lost her life under controversial circumstances. Her family has alleged that she died due to the transfusion of the wrong blood group, marking the third such death at the state-run hospital since February 2024. The woman’s family says they were kept in the dark about the alleged transfusion error.

In February 2024, a 23-year-old road accident victim from Bandikui town died after reportedly receiving the wrong blood group, leading to kidney complications and his eventual death.

Families of patients have repeatedly raised concerns over such errors.

Despite at least three such incidents having been reported from the hospital in the past two years, no senior official has been held to account for these potentially lethal lapses, reports TOI.
