Tata Memorial Hospital introduces AI-enabled Digital Mammography for Breast Cancer detection

Mumbai: Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, inaugurated a state-of-the-art Digital Mammography Machine equipped with Tomosynthesis and Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Monday, 26 January 2026, at Homi Bhabha Block. The event was held in the august presence of Additional Chief Secretary to the Hon'ble Chief Minister, Government of Maharashtra, and Managing Director, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), Mrs. Ashwini Bhide, IAS.

The occasion was also graced by Director, Tata Memorial Centre, Dr. Sudeep Gupta; Director, Tata Memorial Hospital, Dr. C. S. Pramesh and Head, Department of Radiodiagnosis, Tata Memorial Hospital, Dr. Suyash Kulkarni, along with senior faculty members and staff. 

Addressing the gathering, Mrs. Ashwini Bhide appreciated Tata Memorial Hospital’s continued efforts to strengthen public healthcare. She stated that the newly inaugurated equipment is dedicated to the service of patients and the larger public good, underscoring the importance of accessible and high-quality cancer care, the PIB stated.

Director, Tata Memorial Centre, Dr Sudeep Gupta, highlighted the rising incidence of breast cancer among women in India and emphasized that early detection through regular screening significantly improves treatment outcomes and long-term survival. He noted that the newly commissioned digital mammography system would further enhance the hospital’s capacity for early and accurate detection of breast cancer.

Director, Tata Memorial Hospital, Dr. C. S. Pramesh, affirmed that the installation of this advanced imaging equipment would significantly strengthen the hospital’s breast cancer screening and diagnostic services, enabling earlier diagnosis and improved treatment outcomes. He reiterated Tata Memorial Hospital’s commitment to cancer prevention, early detection, and comprehensive patient care.

Head, Department of Radiodiagnosis, Tata Memorial Hospital, Dr. Suyash Kulkarni, explained that the advanced system combines high-resolution imaging with Artificial Intelligence to assist clinicians in identifying suspicious areas with greater accuracy and efficiency. He added that the technology is particularly beneficial for detecting cancers in dense breast tissue and helps reduce the need for additional imaging, thereby enabling quicker diagnosis and timely intervention.

Speaking on the occasion, the leadership reaffirmed Tata Memorial Hospital’s dedication to improving women’s health services through the adoption of advanced medical technologies and the delivery of high-quality, patient-centric cancer care.
