Medical Negligence Suspected in Sullia Mother’s Death Post-Childbirth

Sullia: A 29-year-old woman from Sampaje village has tragically lost her life due to excessive bleeding following childbirth, raising serious concerns about alleged medical negligence at a government hospital in Sullia.

According to the news reports, the deceased Madhura, wife of Shekhar Malekudiya from Nujodi Mapala house in Naravi village, Beltangady, was admitted to the government hospital in Sullia on June 2 for the delivery of her second child. The couple, married for six years, already had a three-and-a-half-year-old son.

On June 3 at 6:45 pm, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl. However, within a few hours, around 9 pm, she began experiencing severe postpartum bleeding. As the situation worsened, doctors advised shifting her to Lady Goschen Hospital in Mangaluru. The transfer took place at 11:30 pm, but despite all efforts, Madhura succumbed to her condition at 12:37 am on June 4.

The tragedy took a controversial turn when Madhura’s body was released to the family without a post-mortem. As the family prepared for her final rites, local community leaders, including Sridhar Eedu, president of the Karnataka Malekudiya Association, intervened. Their efforts prompted the district health department and police officials to order a post-mortem.

According to Daijiworld, following their intervention, a post-mortem was conducted. The family also filed a complaint at the Sullia police station, demanding appropriate action against those responsible and compensation from the government for the child’s future.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that following the death of a new mother due to postpartum haemorrhage at Saksham Health Care Hospital in Sector-83, Gurugram, a gynaecologist posted at the hospital has been booked in a medical negligence case in connection with the incident. The action comes after an inquiry into the incident found the doctor at fault, as the patient’s medical history, having undergone a previous C-section, clearly indicated that a normal delivery was not advisable. Despite this, the doctor reportedly chose to proceed with a normal delivery.
