Medical Negligence

Kozhikode: A woman from Vadakara died at the Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) on Monday morning, days after undergoing a hysterectomy, with her family alleging medical negligence.

According to the news reports, the 49-year-old woman, a resident of Mandarathur in Vadakara, was admitted to the hospital on October 5 for the removal of her uterus. The surgery was performed at the Institute of Maternal and Child Health attached to the medical college.

Her family members said she developed a mild fever after being shifted to the ward. Despite receiving medication and undergoing a urine test to check for infection, her condition deteriorated.

Over the following days, her condition reportedly deteriorated, with symptoms including vomiting, bleeding and diarrhoea. As her condition continued to worsen, she was transferred back to the intensive care unit (ICU) on October 10 for further treatment.

Her relatives alleged that subsequent medical examinations indicated an injury to her intestine. They suspect that the injury may have led to an infection and further complications.

According to the family, doctors later performed an emergency operation that lasted several hours in an attempt to address the complications. Following the procedure, the woman was placed on ventilator support as her condition remained critical.

Despite receiving treatment, she died on Monday morning at the hospital.

Police have registered a case of unnatural death. An autopsy has been scheduled to help determine the cause of death, and further action is expected to depend on the post-mortem findings and the investigation, TNIE reported.

Following the complaint, the hospital superintendent sought an explanation from the head of the gynaecology department. Meanwhile, the police investigation, led by the Medical College assistant commissioner of police, is continuing. Investigators have collected the relevant medical records and are awaiting the postmortem report. A detailed report will subsequently be submitted to the DMO, TOI reports.

The allegations of medical negligence have not yet been established, and the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death remain subject to investigation. She is survived by her husband and two children.
