Maha: 19 patients, staff of Max Neuro hospital evacuated after blaze in adjacent scrap yard

Pune: Over 19 patients and staff were evacuated from Max Neuro Hospital as a safety measure after a fire gutted a nearby scrap yard in the Kasarwadi area of Pimpri Chinchwad in the Pune district late last night.

No one was injured in the blaze, said an official.

The fire broke out at around 2 am at the scrap yard of used tyres in the Kasarwadi area of Pimpri Chinchwad township, the official said.

"As the fire was close to the Max Neuro Hospital and there were chances that it may be affected by the blaze, all 19 patients were evacuated from there and shifted to a nearby hospital," said the fire brigade official from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.

Fourteen fire vehicles were pressed into action and the blaze was doused by 5 am, he said.    

No one was injured in the fire, the official said, adding the cooling operation was underway.      

Fire Officer Rushikant Chipade told Indian Express, “The scrap yard is located on the very next plot adjacent to the hospital and the fire started in the area of scrap near the hospital wall. As the fire intensified, it posed a great risk to the hospital patients and property.”     

“We initially operated in defensive mode for the hospital till the time 19 patients and staff members were evacuated. The cooling operation was subsequently conducted to ensure there are no secondary fires. No casualties were reported in the fire and property damage to the hospital was also averted,” Chipade added.

Officials said of the 19 patients, 12 were shifted to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital, three to Aditya Birla Hospital, and four were sent home. The hospital’s staff was also evacuated in time.
