Amritsar: The Punjab Health Department has issued a comprehensive winter advisory ahead of the seasonal temperature drop, urging the general public—especially children, the elderly, and individuals with heart or respiratory conditions—to take special precautions to avoid cold-related illnesses.

The advisory warns that the sudden drop in temperatures in the coming weeks may lead to a rise in respiratory infections, influenza, and other winter-related ailments. Health officials have stressed the importance of wearing warm clothing, especially covering the head, ears, and feet, and avoiding exposure to cold winds, particularly during early mornings and late evenings.

Speaking to the Tribune IndiaCivil Surgeon Dr Swaranjit Dhawan said, Elderly people and those with heart or respiratory diseases have been advised to exercise extra caution. "Winter puts additional strain on the heart and lungs. People with chronic conditions like asthma, bronchitis, or hypertension should take their medicines regularly and consult doctors if they face breathing problems or chest discomfort."

Children have also been identified as a high-risk group. Parents are encouraged to ensure their children are well-protected from the cold, consume a healthy diet, and stay hydrated to strengthen their immune systems. Schools have been asked to suspend early morning outdoor activities on particularly cold days to safeguard students' health.

To further reduce the risk of seasonal illnesses, the Health Department has advised the public to get vaccinated against the flu, maintain good indoor ventilation, and keep living spaces warm and dry. People are also urged to avoid crowded indoor environments and maintain personal hygiene to prevent the spread of infections.
