UP Govt issues Heatwave Advisory Amid Soaring Temperatures
UP Govt Launches Heatwave Safety Protocols Across Districts
Lucknow: In light of the escalating heatwave threat, the Uttar Pradesh government has issued a comprehensive advisory aimed at protecting public health and safety. Temperatures have soared past 45°C in several districts, prompting urgent measures to mitigate the impact of the extreme heat.
Acting on the warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed the relief commissioner’s office and the health department to issue timely alerts and intensify public safety efforts.
According to the advisory, citizens are urged to stay indoors between 12 noon and 4 PM, when temperatures typically peak. For those who must venture outside, the health department recommends wearing light-coloured, breathable clothing and using umbrellas, hats, or sunglasses for protection when outdoors. Staying well-hydrated is essential, with recommended fluids including lemon water, coconut water, and shikanji. It is also advised to avoid stale or protein-rich foods on an empty stomach, as well as to limit the consumption of alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks, which can contribute to dehydration.

As per the recent media reports by Free Press Journal, key guidelines include staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and creating shaded rest areas for outdoor workers. The Health Department has identified critical symptoms like high fever (40°C+), dizziness, and dry skin as requiring immediate medical attention.
A newly introduced 'Mitra System' requires coworkers to monitor each other's well-being at job sites. Industries operating in high-temperature environments have also received specific instructions to insulate hot machinery and modify work schedules to avoid exposure during the hottest parts of the day.
Partha Sarathi Sen Sharma, Principal Secretary of the health department, confirmed that the government is committed to safeguarding vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Children are particularly at risk. The guidelines recommend keeping them indoors during peak heat, ensuring they wear loose, light clothing, and encouraging frequent fluid intake. A critical warning has been issued against leaving children or pets unattended in parked vehicles, a potentially fatal oversight during extreme heat.
To raise awareness, the government is distributing educational posters statewide that explain symptoms and prevention of heat-related illnesses.
