Manipal: Start-up Blackfrog Technologies on Tuesday said it has opened its medical device manufacturing facility in the city. The plant was inaugurated by Dr Ranjan Pai, Chairman, Manipal Education & Medical Group (MEMG).

Blackfrog Technologies has developed Emvólio, a patented rapid cooling technology for last-mile transport of vaccines, breast milk, blood serums, medications, and specimens with minimal freeze-thaw cycles. It has been deploying its vaccine transport systems across India in coordination with National Health Mission at the state level.

While inaugurating the medical device unit, Dr. Pai said that setting up a 1,500 unit per month capacity medical device manufacturing facility within six years after graduation by a startup co-founded by two engineers is commendable.

Speaking on the occasion, he stressed the significance of industry-academia collaboration. Dr. Pai also noted the larger role that cold chain technologies would play in the future of delivering quality healthcare. Several distinguished persons from academia, impact investment community, and medical devices industry attended the event.

Dr Neeta Rao, Senior Health Lead, USAID/India was one of the dignitaries and she spoke about the partnership with Blackfrog Technologies to take the Emvolio cold chain technology to the African continent.

Dr. Manish Diwan, DGM & Head, Strategic Partnerships and Entrepreneurship Development (SPED), Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), Government of India, Dr. Sapna Poti, Director of Strategic Alliances at PSA Office, Government of India, Dr. H.S. Ballal, Pro-Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Lt. Gen. (Dr) M. D. Venkatesh, Vice-Chancellor MAHE and Cdr. (Dr.) Anil Rana, Director, Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) attended the event. Blackfrog Technologies is supported by MAHE incubators and funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), BIRAC, Venture Centre Pune, CCAMP Bangalore, Social Alpha, and USAID-supported SAMRIDH.
