Biocon Chief Kiran Mazumdar Shaw condoles former Karnataka CM S M Krishna death

Bengaluru: Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, the Executive Chairperson of Biocon Limited, expressed her condolences on the passing of former Karnataka Chief Minister and External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna.

S.M. Krishna, aged 92, passed away at his Bengaluru residence in the early hours of Tuesday after a prolonged illness. 

Krishna was a visionary moderniser who transformed the way Karnataka developed into tech leadership, Shaw said in a post on 'X'.

"He created Vision Groups that are a unique model the world over. I consider him as one of the great CMs of the country. Om Shanthi," the Biocon chief said.

"I knew the family very well. I had a huge respect for SM Krishna. For me, it's personal sorrow. I think he was such a visionary man, a great CM, and one of the greatest reformists of our times...He is the one who built Brang Bengaluru. Through his reformist policies, he created a technology leadership position for our city and state...We must make sure that we build on what he has left," Shaw told ANI.

Born on May 1, 1932, to a Vokkaliga family in Somanahalli village of Mandya district, Karnataka, SM Krishna held key positions in Indian politics.

He served as Minister of External Affairs of India from 2009 to October 2012. He was the 10th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004 and the 19th Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008.

SM Krishna had served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Vidhana Soudha from December 1989 to January 1993. He was also a member of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha at various times from 1971 to 2014. He is widely credited with putting Bengaluru on the world map by building the foundation for making it the IT Hub that it is today during his tenure as Chief Minister. In 2023, Krishna was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award of India.
