DCGI Classifies 48 Medical Devices Related To Oncology
New Delhi: In order to regulate the safety, quality and performance of medical devices, the Drug Controller General (India), Directorate General of Health Services, India's Central Medical Devices Regulator, has issued a notice classifying medical devices pertaining to oncology under the provisions of the Medical Devices Rules, 2017.
As per the Medical Device Rule, 2017, Medical devices are classified as follows:
(1) Medical devices other than in vitro diagnostic medical devices shall be classified on the basis of parameters specified in Part I of the First Schedule, in the following classes, namely:—
(i) low risk - Class A;
(ii) low moderate risk- Class B;
(iii) moderate high risk- Class C;
(iv) high risk- Class D.
(2) In vitro diagnostic medical devices shall be classified on the basis of parameters specified in Part II of the First Schedule, in the following classes, namely:—
(i) low risk - Class A;
(ii) low moderate risk- Class B;
(iii) moderate high risk- Class C;
(iv)risk—Class Class D.
In connection to the above, in the exercise of the power conferred under sub-rule (3) of rule 4 of the Medical Devices Rules, 2017,the Drug Control General India classifies the medical devices, Appendix A, based on the intended use of the device, the risk associated with the device, and other parameters specified in the First Schedule.
Furthermore, the updated list of medical devices placed at Appendix A subjected to the followings:
i. General intended use given against each of the devices is for guidance to the applicants intends to furnish application of import or manufacture of medical devices under the provisions of Medical De\/ices Rules, 2017. However, a de\lice may have specific intended use as specified by its manufacturer.
ii. This list is dynamic and is subject to revision from time to time under the provisions of the Medical Devices Rules, 2017.
