New Delhi: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech at Red Fort said that the government has plans to increase the number of 'Jan Aushadhi Kendras' from 10,000 to 25,000.

He said Jan Aushadhi Kendras gave new power to the people, especially the middle class. If someone is diagnosed with diabetes then a monthly bill of Rs. 3000 gets accrued.

The Government will launch Vishwakarma scheme with an allocation of ₹13,000 to 15,000 crore in the next month for those with traditional skills. He said the government is working to increase the number of 'Jan Aushadhi Kendra' (subsidised medicine shops) from 10,000 to 25,000.

With an objective of making quality generic medicines available at affordable prices to all, Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) was launched by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India in November, 2008. Under the scheme, dedicated outlets known as Janaushadhi Kendras are opened to provide generic medicines at affordable prices. A total 9512 Jan Aushadhi Kendras have been opened across the country till 30th June 2023. Product basket of PMBJP comprises 1800 drugs and 285 surgical items. The Scheme is implemented by a society registered under the Societies Registration Act, viz., Pharma & Medical Bureau of India (PMBI) [erstwhile Bureau of Pharma PSUs of India (BPPI)].

These products are available at 50% - 90% lower prices compared to the market. In last 9 years, the number of Kendras have increased by 100 times and the sales have increased more than 170 times.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that Indian Railways had conceptualized a policy framework to establish Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJKs) in circulating areas and concourses of stations.
