Chandigarh: Panic gripped Sector 32 market late Thursday night after two masked men allegedly fired gunshots outside a chemist shop, police officials stated. The incident took place on January 15, and although no injuries were reported, the firing caused fear among shopkeepers and residents in the area.

According to police, the incident occurred outside Sewak Pharmacy, located in Sector 32-D, when the shop was open and staff members were present inside. The attackers arrived at the spot on a Honda Activa scooter and fired shots before fleeing, triggering chaos in the busy market area.

CCTV footage from nearby establishments reportedly captured the two unidentified assailants wearing masks as they arrived on the scooter, opened fire outside the chemist shop, and escaped within moments. The visuals are being examined to identify the suspects and trace their escape route.

The Police Control Room (PCR) received information about the firing at around 9.32 pm, following which teams from the Sector 34 police station, along with personnel from the District Crime Cell and the Crime Branch, rushed to the scene. During inspection, police recovered one empty cartridge shell from the spot, confirming that at least one shot was fired.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that the shop owners had not received any extortion calls or threats prior to the incident. Police officials said there was no immediate indication that the firing was linked to extortion, and the exact motive behind the attack remains unclear.

According to a recent media report in The Indian Express, police are analysing CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and questioning people to identify the attackers. Investigators are also exploring the possibility of personal rivalry or enmity as a potential motive behind the firing.

As of the latest update, police had not registered an FIR, and further investigation was underway to ascertain the sequence of events and identify those involved in the incident.
