Mumbai: Medical Representative circulates fake news of doctor death; arrested

Mumbai: A 21-year-old Medical Representative (MR) was recently arrested for circulating a piece of fake news about the death of a COVID positive doctor.

As per a recent media account, the MR from Santa Cruz is identified as Nitesh Dhaneshwar Tripathi. He sparked the rumor via a social media platform. Tripathi had sent messages to many people on WhatsApp, stating that the doctor from Andheri had passed away after contracting the infection.

For instance, the doctor was tested positive for coronavirus and even his spouse and daughter were tested positive too. All of them were admitted to a hospital for their treatment.

Meanwhile one of their neighbors received the message on WhatsApp which falsely confirmed that the doctor had succumbed to COVID. The neighbor immediately reached out to the doctor to confirm the news and found that the news has no truth and the doctor is alive and safe.

Thereafter, he moved a complaint with the DN Nagar police regarding the fake news. Following his complaint, a first information report (FIR) was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

On August 27, the MR was arrested by the DN Nagar police. Besides, five more accused have been held so far in this case.

Parameshwar Ganme, senior inspector from DN Nagar police station told HT, "We have arrested Tripathi and are investigating the case." The accused was produced before the Andheri metropolitan magistrate court, where he was released on bail.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about a 22-year old medical representative of a pharmaceutical company who was arrested for allegedly molesting a dentist in her clinic recently on the pretext of exhibiting products of his firm.
