Pharma D automatically eligible for posts meant for Bpharma, D Pharma: PCI issues clarification

Pharm. D is the professional pharmacy doctoral program that has been recognized and regulated by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). It is a total six years program after 10+2 or D. Pharm which includes five years of academic study and one year of internship.

Launched in 2008, the curriculum is a combination of science and art of dispensing medicines. Pharm D candidates get skilled in diagnosis, therapeutics usage of drugs, treatment and selection of diseases, and so on. They perform tasks like monitoring patients, diagnosing the disease, and others.

However, to clarify the confusion over minimum qualification for a pharmacist in India, PCI has clearly stated that D.Pharm, B.Pharm, Pharm.D are the registerable qualifications under the Pharmacy Act, 1948 provided they are obtained from an institution approved by the PCI u/s 12 of the Pharmacy Act, 1948 for the purpose of registration as a pharmacist.

The Council recommended the same to the Central Government that, via its recently issued Gazette held;

"The Central Government on the recommendations of the Pharmacy Council of India constituted under Section 3 of Pharmacy Act, 1948 (8 of 1948), decided that a person holding the Pharm. D qualification being higher qualification shall automatically become eligible for appointment to various posts where a person holding I)Diploma in Pharmacy or Bachelor of Pharmacy or Master of Pharmacy qualification is eligible to be appointed."
