Pharmacist Murders Wife With Midazolam, Potassium Chloride Overdose, Gets Life Term Along With Girlfriend
Bhubaneswar: The Second Additional Sessions Court in Bhubaneswar has sentenced a pharmacist and his girlfriend to life imprisonment for murdering the pharmacist's wife by administering a fatal overdose of anaesthetic medication and potassium chloride. The court also directed the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to determine and provide appropriate compensation to the victim's family.
According to the prosecution, the incident took place in 2024. The pharmacist had been living separately from his wife due to marital discord and was in a relationship with his girlfriend, a nursing professional. Investigators alleged that the duo conspired to eliminate the victim and lured her to a house in Bhubaneswar on the pretext of resolving family issues.
The prosecution stated that after the victim arrived at the house, she was injected with an excessive dose of Midazolam, a sedative commonly used during medical procedures, followed by potassium chloride (KCl). The overdose proved fatal, leading to her death. Investigators alleged that the accused intentionally used their medical knowledge to execute the crime and make the death appear less suspicious.
Following the incident, police launched an investigation and arrested three persons in connection with the case. During the trial, the prosecution relied on medical evidence, forensic findings, documentary records, witness testimonies, and circumstantial evidence to establish the conspiracy and the involvement of the accused.
After evaluating the evidence, the court held the pharmacist and his girlfriend guilty of criminal conspiracy and murder. However, the third accused was acquitted after the court found that the prosecution had failed to establish his involvement beyond reasonable doubt.
According to a recent media report in The New Indian Express, while delivering the verdict, the court observed that the offence was committed in a planned and calculated manner by misusing medical knowledge and access to pharmaceutical drugs. Considering the seriousness of the crime, the court sentenced both the pharmacist and his girlfriend to life imprisonment. It also directed the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to assess and award appropriate compensation to the legal heirs of the deceased under the victim compensation scheme.
