NIMS performs first state heart transplant surgery in Telangana

The Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims) conducted the first heart transplant surgery in the hospital. It is also the first state run hospital in Telangana to successfully complete heart transplantation, with a 30 yr Anganwadi teacher from Karimnagar undergoing a surgery at Nims.

The patient underwent a surgery under the supervision team of Dr RV Kumar, head of Cardio Thoracic Surgery department, and Dr Gopinath, head of anaesthesiology department, Nims. The surgeons immediately swung into action after receiving the donor information, thanks to a donor heart under Jeevandan scheme, the State-run organ donation programme.

The marathon transplantation surgery started at 12.30 am and was over by 7.30 am on Thursday," said Dr R V Kumar, adding that the patient was conscious and recovering fast, as reported by TOI.

Hemlatha was under observation at NIMS for 10 days as her condition was critical. Dr R.V. Kumar, professor and head of department of cardiothoracic surgery, said, "She was lucky to find a donor. All factors like blood group and age of the donor matched.", as reported by Deccan Chronicle.

The donor heart came from P Vinay Kumar, 20, who was declared brain-dead a day before the operation was conducted. On Saturday, December 5, the student received serious injuries in a road accident was shifted to a local hospital in Warangal district. Later, he was shifted to Yashoda Hosptial, Secunderabad, where the attending doctors declared him brain dead on Tuesday, December 8, as confirmed by The Hindu.

Kumar's father Yadagiri, a railway employee, also donated his son's kidneys, eyes and liver to Jeevandan.
