A new study published in the journal of Revista Da Associacao Medica Brasileira revealed that vitamins B12 and D may be used to treat pregnant women with recurrent vaginitis, and homocysteine, vitamin B12, and vitamin D levels may contribute to the genesis of the disorder.

Recurrent vaginitis during pregnancy is linked to adverse obstetric outcomes, including low birth weight, early rupture of membranes, preterm labor, and puerperal infection, in addition to maternal consequences. Preventive care and proper diagnosis and treatment of recurring cervicitis and vaginitis during pregnancy are unquestionably crucial, improve maternal health, and avoid adverse gestational outcomes for the mother-fetal pair. Therefore, this study assessed the levels of vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine, and vitamin D in pregnant women who have recurrent vaginitis and ascertain if these factors play a role in the disease's genesis.

A total of 30 pregnant women with recurrent vaginitis in their first trimester (group I) who visited the obstetrics and gynecology clinic at least twice between 1.5.2019 and 1.5.2022 and 30 healthy pregnant women in their first trimester with no complaints (group II) were included in the research.

Vitamin B12, homocysteine, folic acid, and vitamin D blood levels were compared between the vagititis group and the control group. Vitamin B12 levels (ng/L) were 149.00 (63.00-328.00) in group I and 261.00 (126.00-544.00) in group II. The folate levels (μg/L) were 10.56 (3.93-23.33) in group I and 9.48 (3.53-24.10) in group II. Vitamin D levels (ng/mL) were 36.54 (23.65-75.68) in group I and 52.45 (26.57-105.00) in group II.

Homocysteine levels (μmol/L) were 10.75 (6.38-24.90) in group I (vaginitis positive) and 9.32 (4.26-17.10) in group II (control). The vaginitis group (group I) had a statistically significant increase in homocysteine levels. The vaginitis group (group I) had considerably lower levels of vitamin B12 and vitamin D.

Overall, homocysteine, vitamin B12, and vitamin D levels in pregnant women with recurrent vaginitis may have a role in the genesis of the disorder, with vitamins B12 and D being investigated for therapy.
