Bhubaneswar: In a bid to make the cancer care accessible and reduce the waiting period of cancer patients, Odisha government will spend nearly Rs.1300 crore in next five years.

Chief Secretary A P Padhi who presided over the first Advisory Committee meeting for a comprehensive cancer care programme , told newsmen here today while the Tata Trust and the state government would provide Rs 500 crore each in phases, Rs 385 crore would come from PMSSY.

The money, he said, would be spent for construction of network facilities, planning and implementation of cancer control activities, integration of government schemes to provide affordable health care, upgradation of Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Centre (AHRCC), the apex centre for treatment of cancer and 12 other centres, promotion of oncology education, training and research.

The Chief Secretary said the state government would also constitute Odisha Cancer Care Foundation to oversee the proposed infrastructure development by the Tata Trust.

The government had constituted the Advisory Committee with the Chief Secretary as its Chairman after it signed an MoU with the Tata Trust last year for providing affordable health care to cancer patients.

At the meeting the Tata Trust has recommended a three-tier step-down model focusing on prevention and early detection of cancer and making cancer care accessible by reducing the travel time to a maximum 2.5 to 3 hours, which would result in improved survival rates.

In the first level, the Tata Trust would set up a Greenfield Hospital in Bhubaneswar and develop the infrastructure at AHRCC in Cuttack.

In the second level, comprehensive diagnostic facilities for treatment of cancer for more than 95 percent of patients would be set up at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) Burla, MKCG Medical College and Hospital,Berhampur, Government medical colleges in Kalahandi and Koraput and Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar.

In the third level, daycare and diagnostic facilities would be set up at the district headquarters hospitals (DHH) in Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Baripada, Nabarangpur, Balangir, Bargarh and Angul.

In addition to it the Tata Trust has also recommended to set up daycare and diagnostics centres in the remaining DHHs, outside of its proposed network.
